EOY 2015

As many of you may know, I recently went down to this year's EOY event. This was both an exciting and nerve wrecking experience for me. Partly because it was my first time attending a cosplay event. Partly because I was under-equipped and did not possess an actual camera for the event. Partly or mostly, also because I was going down to the event alone. Basically I didn't arrange beforehand to go down there with anyone. So, I just YOLO-ed and decided to set out on my own to see how it would be.

Honestly even alone, I did enjoy myself somewhat. I found the event and people there rather interesting. So many people in colorful and interesting costumes. Clearly, much effort was put into them. Unfortunately, armed only with my Galaxy S6, I could barely take usable pictures. Only Facebook usable ones. Didn't feel like I did the pictures any justice.

There are just so many people! I mean it's way more than I would have expected many years back. I remember when I was still otaku-mode in secondary school, the japanese culture hadn't really caught on that much yet. Fast forward to today, it's almost mainstream even. It's not like an 'acceptable' thing to be cosplaying in Singapore. Back then if you walk around like that, people will be like: "eh, you ki siao ah!".

But it's great, that this thing has more than caught on here. Japan is after all, my most favorite country (sorry SG50). So being able to experience some of the culture right here is pretty cool. I will continue to scour out more different types of events that can help give me that Japanese flavour on our little red dot.

One thing I am looking to improve for future events though, is to try to plan out based on the schedule. I felt like I didn't maximize my time there. I should have had a proper lunch before going. I had thought of having lunch at Doki Doki Hearts Cafe there, but didn't check the menu beforehand. How naive lol. They only sell small rice balls that didn't really tickle my palate. Ended up sitting on the ground eating packed macaroni from the malay stall.

Also didn't really watch any of the performances, not that I know what half of them are. I'm totally not plugged in to the J-culture in Singapore anymore. How should I say this? Basically I was pretty into it back in secondary school. But afterwards I went through a period of reform, and have long since shed away the otaku image. Though, I still love Japan and all things associated with it. :)

One of the highlights from the event, is that I got a chance to meet one of my Dota buddies in person for the first time. Honestly took my own time, and a bit of guts to muster up the courage to meet a stranger for the first time. She's from Indonesia, and friend of a friend of a colleague I met at orientation. I mean I could recognize from far based on the pictures she sent me before. Just didn't know how to engage a conversation. Luckily, she was friendly and proactive enough to keep our conversations going. Her boyfriend, also my dota friend, was there to keep the friendly lighthearted talk going as well. Nice chaps. I would talk to them again if I see them at other events.

And so, that was my first EOY experience. I felt like I could have done more, took better pictures, etc. But that's just how it is with events, leaving you wishing for more. Also, going out alone turned out to be a good and bad thing. Sometimes it can be refreshing to just wander about by yourself. Only downside is some inconvenience and not having anyone to talk to.

Anyway, I shall be attending more of such events in future. In fact, I will be going to Natsumatsuri on Saturday, and ICDS on Sunday. Trying to at least attend 1 event/activity every weekend. That way, life won't be so boring and routine. Hopefully, I will meet some of my old friends at some of these events, or better yet make brand new friends. Staying hopeful for the latter. Finger crossed. XD

Oh yeah, I've also uploaded all the pictures I took onto Facebook. So if you don't mind the relatively poorer quality, you can view the album at the link below:
