Ok so what I have been currently doing, is to post an update every Sunday night reflecting on what has happened recently in the week that past. This sounds ok in theory, but the problem is that no action is taken to correct anything wrong that happened. Also is very reactive and retroactive if and when anything is done. The situation has past and it's over, it's history. Not to mention, the nature of my work is mostly classified or restricted anyway, so it's difficult to recount exactly anything that happens at work. If that's the case, why should I continue wasting my time blogging anyway? It's taking me no where...
Another issue, is the whole idea of me needing to chart out my general direction for "Philson 2020", or so the plan goes. It's really difficult for me to actually get down to doing it. Not to mention, looking so far ahead into the future is challenging, albiet interesting too. But you see, the thing is large long-term goals are nearly impossible to achieve all at once. It takes smaller goals and milestones in order to accomplish them. Incrementally, the word I abhor. I love big sweeping changes as opposed to painful constant incremental changes. But I guess with age comes weathered wisdom, which has slightly tamed my perception. I recognized the need to put into place a system for continual improvement.
So here is the solution, tell me if I sound crazy. I shall make TWO blog posts a week! Well, not that posting more makes things any better. The whole idea is to have a 2 step process. The first blog post will set the context and targets for the week. The second blog post will be the review. This way, I can set weekly goals for myself to achieve. It will not only promote improvement, but help me break free from the endless cycle of monotony and complacency that tends to set in very easily. And as an added measure, there is the after the fact review, where I can reflect on my week to see what targets were met or not met, and how I can change to ensure that I do better next time. This sounds like a better overall system to me.
I guess the major difference here as opposed to what I am already doing, is the goal setting part. This way, it will allow me to prioritize what I am doing, and allocate enough time and energy to specific targets on a smaller timeframe. Micro goal setting. And then all these will link back and form part of the larger overarching goals that will be part of "Philson 2020". So I will not only have an end goal, but also constantly think about how to achieve them on a weekly basis. I would think, that this is a better formula for success. Let me know if you have comments.
The reason I feel the need for this prioritization, is because I think I have been playing too much Dota recently. Like my entire life has become Eat, Sleep, Work, Dota, rinse and repeat. Even in my opinion, this is a super unhealthy cycle. I mean, my goal was to improve my skills and increase my MMR, I even created a new smurf account and all... But somehow this is not right, even I know it. I need to strike a balance for what I'm trying to achieve IRL and what I am trying to achieve online in general. Yeah, I don't even think Dota is all that I should be doing online. There is just so much more I can achieve, and tie back to my life. Just need some imagination and a whole load of determination.
That being said, this will truly be a test on my discipline and self-determination. Because, it is so insanely hard to quit a game that is so engaging and highly skilled. You just can't quit it! So, the incremental step here would be to moderate it a little and make sure I don't forget my other things in life. Time and energy are a precious resource for the working man. It's really important not to fall into an infinite cycle as age continually sets in. The consequences are surely dire and undesirable.
Let's just leave it as that for now. Shall post the goal setting sometime soon!
