Something interesting happened today. The IT security lecturer was very free, and wanted to "engage" us better, so he did a mini CSI on the internet profiles of 2 "random" people. Hence, this blog was revealed as well, not that it was even hidden at all... Hopefully, some of the people in class would do a follow up google. So, I decided I would post an update to mention this issue.
First, about my stance on security. I wanna say that, I totally understand the importance of Information Security. Really. I scored A and A- in the 2 security modules I took. It's just that I don't find it interesting at all. Otherwise, I would have taken up the CSIT offer. It pays higher. Security hinders creativity and innovation much like bureaucracy does. Especially for people like me who constantly seek to innovate in the realm of technology. An excessive security policy WILL hinder you. It's like 1 step forward, 2 steps back. You want an innovative culture, but you also wanna restrict them. Whut?
That's just my personal feelings, it may not be pragmatic. However having said that, I must say that I understand the impact of my actions perfectly well, and I don't do things without thinking. Everything I post online, is to me perfectly alright for the public eyes to see one. Short of actually hacking into my accounts, there is nothing juicy you can find about me lah. The most "juicy" stories are already right here on the blog, where I really wear my heart on my sleeve. I think I do get emotional here a lot. But I am not hiding it! You can easily find this blog on Google. In fact, I'd be real disappointed if nobody found this!
I was pretty ok with most of my stuff that I saw on screen today, those are for sharing anyway. He also help me put up my Online Resume. That one of course can find lah, it's for potential employers mah. What DID surprise me, is the fact that he found 2 of my close friends, which I dunno how. I double-checked FB privacy settings on that liao leh. Perhaps it was reverse engineered using graph search, found through sentiment analysis or something. Who knows.
But aiya, even that one I don't mind people knowing. I only don't want to send the wrong message. Because, they did a CSI on another girl too, and one of her close connections was her fiance. Like quite bad sia, she felt embarrassed and on the spot started deleting stuff from her blog. Me, I had nothing to fear. My only worry was that it could falsely imply that I am in a relationship with one of my close connections. SO, I WANT TO MAKE IT CLEAR. When I said green light yesterday, I meant it. All systems green. I don't lie one. No amber, rainbow or purple light. As the lecturer said, he also can't tell based on the connections, so don't anyhow assume.
Another thing he brought up, is that I came from an "ah beng" school (Montfort), then went to SR, then NUS. Wow, judgemental much? But, that is absolutely true. It's the story of my life, and something I'm proud of. I started out in an "ah beng" neighbourhood school, had poor grades and constantly failed at math. Unbelievably, my efforts paid off and I made it into JC. From there, I proceeded to top the cohort for H2 computing, and became first in my class. Subsequently, through sheer hard work, I was the only 1 in my class who made it to NUS. I think 1 other guy made it to NTU, the rest went SIM or somewhere. Entered NUS, culture shock and flunk first sem. Claw my fucking way back from the depths, and made it onto the Dean's List, beating the RI and HCI people in the process. After that, landed interviews and had job offers before I graduated. The rest as they say, is history. You tell me, why shouldn't I be proud of my life story?
I think I got too caught up. I'm not trying to be defensive, but I just thought I should clarify why you can find so many things about me. It's intentional one, I WANT to be noticed online. I am also perfectly aware of the stuff I share. Anyway security things aside, I want to say that I will still continue to update this blog and all my social networks as per normal. So for people who just happened to find this page, and those who after class did their own mini CSI, I welcome you to friend; follow; and subscribe to me. The links are all on the left panel. Thanks, and hopefully I will make some new friends out of this free publicity! ;)
